Fine performances of major works - what's not to love? July 28, 2010 Michael Lichter (Buffalo, NY USA) This collection consists of a set of fine performances of major orchestral works that debuted (if the title is to be trusted) in the 1880s. The 1880s fall in the late Romantic period, which means that these pieces are generally quite close to the mental picture most Americans have of classical music. The included pieces are complex and interesting enough for close listening, but also sufficiently well-behaved (no 20th Century atonality here!) to play in the background. I don't see how any classical music fan could be displeased with this collection.
